Mt. Thalay Sagar Expedition

Rising to the height of 6904m, Thalay Sagar is reckoned to be one of the most challenging peaks in Garhwal Himalaya. With the demanding fifth class climbing requirement and technical ice climb starting in lower section only, Thalay Sagar caught the attention of adventure-seekers from all around the globe. The first summit bid was successful in late 1970’s and since then many have anticipated to conquer this unrivalled peak. It is the second highest peak lying on the southern side of Hindu holy site Gangotri. At the base of the peak is Lake Kedartal, which is acclaimed to be a triangular water body that is stunningly beautiful. Around 15 ascents to the peak have so far been attempted from 9 different routes, the most challenging one being the band of shale. The expedition to Mt. Thalay Sagar is indeed a challenging, however, the summit bid is absolutely rewarding. Here is the detailed itinerary that discusses our carefully crafted expedition package:

Itinerary of trek

On arrival, our representative will meet you and transfer to pre booked hotel in Delhi. Dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

In the morning, meet our expedition manager, who shall assist you to Indian Mountaineering Foundations (IMF) for briefing. After the briefing, we shall drive directly to Rishikesh. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Overnight stay.

Morning after breakfast proceed to Uttarkashi (1150 mts), which will take about 5-6 hrs. Upon arriving at Uttarkashi, we shall check-in at the hotel. After having lunch, we will visit NIM (Nehru Institute of Mountaineering) Institute & Museum. Later, come back to hotel for overnight stay at the hotel.

Day will be for local paper work, permit verification and other necessary documentation. Overnight stay at the hotel.

In the morning after the breakfast, we will drive to Gangotri via Harsil (approx 25 km before Gangotri (3048 mts) by covering approx 95 km in 4-5 hrs. On arrival, check-in at the Hotel/Guest house.

The day will begin with a hike through fir forests before crossing the Kedar Gorge to reach the camp. We will trek 8 km (5-6 hrs) as we follow the Kedar Ganga (Lord Shiva's contribution to Bhagirathi). Overnight stay in tents.

We will trek 4 kms (4-5 hrs) to Kedar Kharak today. The trekking trail will pass through a beautiful birch (Bhoj) forest. The trek is short; however it has several steep sections to cross. The camp has a beautiful backdrop of Bhirgupanth peak. Overnight stay in tents.

Today, we shall trek 5 km (4-5 hrs) to Kedar Tal. The trek will be laborious as it crosses through difficult terrain of boulders and stones. On arrival, we will camp overnight

The day is for acclimatisation and Exploration. Overnight stay in tent.

On these days we will Establish higher camps and attempt summit for Thalay Sagar peak (route depend on team).

Today, we shall leave the base camp and trek back to Kedar Kharak. Overnight stay at camp.

In the morning, after having breakfast, we shall start trekking to Gangotri and from here drive to Uttarkashi. On arrival at Uttarkashi check-in at the hotel for overnight stay.

After breakfast, we shall drive back to Rishikesh. Upon arriving in Rishikesh, we will check-in at the hotel for overnight stay

In the morning, drive to Delhi. On arrival, check-in at the hotel for overnight stay.

After the breakfast, visit IMF for debriefing. Rest of the day will remain free for independent activities. Later, transfer to International airport to board flights for respective destinations.

Guidelines

Things to carry

 

  • Footwear: Trekking Boots (snow and water proof), normal walking boots, and floaters.
  • Few pairs of warm/woolen socks.
  • Luggage: Backpack (50 liters), Daypack (20-30 ltr), Duffel bag.
  • Clothes: Waterproof breathable jacket & pants, Jacket (synthetic or fleece of down feather), insulated pants (Synthetic), Poncho, Sweatshirt, inner thermal (upper & lower), fleece, t-shirts, cotton trekking pants, shorts. * clothing as per the season
  • Gear for Hand & Head: Liner glove, Bandanna, Sun hat, Woolen caps, Face mask etc. Accessories: Sunglasses/Goggles, anti-glare glasses, water bottle, hydra pack, Headlamp with spare bulb and extra batteries.
  • Trekking Gears: Emergency tool kit.
  • Protection and First-Aid: Sunscreen, toiletry kit, water purification tablets, Zip-lock bags, ear plugs, first-aid and all essential medicines.
  • Camping Equipment: Sleeping bags (extreme -5 to +5 Celsius) with liner, trekking poles, etc.
  • Shirts / T-shirts – 2/3, Warm shirt/light micro fleece pullover/full sleeve T shirt
  • Trekking Pants that are water resistant/repellent and having inside lining for extra warmth- 2
  • Windproof/water resistant outer shell (jacket) of good quality with a proper hood
  • Down jacket with min 600 fill power rating, Thick Fleece / Full-sleeve Woollen sweater Thermal inner wear (upper and lower)
  • Woollen cap, Inner fleece gloves, Outer water proof gloves
  • Thick woollen socks and regular socks (4 – 5 pairs), Scarf/muffler (optional)
  • Comfortable waterproof Trekking/Hiking shoes that come with a thick sole and high ankles
  • Camp shoes such as sneakers/sport shoes
  • Raincoat / Poncho
  • Small light weight towel
  • Insulated water bottle and hydration pack (optional)
  • Cap / floppy hat to keep the strong sun away from your face, Sun glasses with UV protection and ability to cut the glare (important when traversing through snow) Sturdy walking stick / Trekking pole
